look cool while doing it · 493 days ago

I want it to look cool. We all want our movies to look ‘cool’: sometimes you’ll say not like so and so’s but more like say Guillermo del Torro. So for this film I’ve selected a few inspirational directors and influences for this genre of film we’re making: a dark neo-noir thriller. Like a Twilight Zone episode directed by David Fincher. As far as the film looking cool that will come from the hard work of the crew as we a assemble the world of ready as noted throughout this piece. The more time we take prior to shooting on working on the details of what does and does take place in our world the more professional and seamless the film becomes. It’s a short that runs maybe ten but has a lot of demanding set ups, camera work and designs. Without all of the pieces moving forward in the same direction the film becomes less than its potential: the more compromise is given the further away from the true film we get.

These directors move the pieces to make it look cool and they mesh with what we are trying to accomplish as well.
Fight Club: Lighting, lighting, and color tones: not even a huge fan of the film but I absolutely love the lighting, camera work et all. Fincher This is more of a best of of but you get the tones right?

Taxi Driver The lone wolf theme: an American standard regarding the masculine themes of isolation and strength in the individual. Scorcese. links the rest if the way….this is a good breakdown of a film that I’m always surprised when I’ve heard someone hasn’t seen it…? if you haven’t seen it what are you waiting for?
watch a clip

Michael Mann: Last of the Mohicans, Heat, Miami Vice. Moving montage visual storytelling techniques. No unnecessary dialogue his films usual seem to ebb and flow creating a large canvass of visuals. Also really good with his music.
another clip bad language good visuals
The Scott Brothers(Tony,Ridley): Blade Runner, Man on Fire, True Romance
not his best but a good look at the visuals we love him for Arnofsky: When training is seen in brief, powerful, tight shots see the fast pace montage take on addiction from Requiem for a Dream.

Kubrick: Frames all my shots: the big wides as drawn in the storyboards are our vast palettes from then we usually push slowly into (Eyes Wide Shut). I like the sense of place these wides give us. We’ll also primarily be moving when the cut comes in as to give it a more natural feel. 2001 in review
